ART AND DESIGN TECHNOLOGY AT AINTREE DAVENHILL PRIMARY SCHOOL

At Aintree Davenhill, we believe that Art and Design is a vital part of a broad and balanced curriculum. It provides children with opportunities to express themselves creatively, develop their imagination, and build confidence through practical and reflective experiences.

We follow the Kapow Primary Art and Design scheme, which ensures a well-sequenced, progressive curriculum from Early Years to Year 6. The programme supports our teachers in delivering engaging and purposeful lessons that teach artistic techniques, promote experimentation, and introduce pupils to a diverse range of artists and art movements.

In addition to high-quality teaching in the classroom, pupils have the opportunity to use our dedicated art studio—an inspiring space where they can explore a wide variety of materials and media. Art is highly valued in our school, and children's work is celebrated through classroom and corridor displays, celebration assemblies, and our annual school art exhibition.

AIMS

The national curriculum for Art and Design aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences.
  • Become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture, and other art techniques.
  • Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art and design.
  • Learn about great artists, craft makers, and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

KEY STAGE 1

In Key Stage 1, pupils are taught to:

  • Use a range of materials creatively to design and make artwork.
  • Share their ideas, experiences, and imagination through drawing, painting, and sculpture.
  • Develop a wide range of techniques in colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form, and space.
  • Learn about the work of artists and craft makers, comparing styles and linking them to their own creations.

KEY STAGE 2

In Key Stage 2, pupils deepen their understanding and build on skills learned in Key Stage 1. They are taught to:

  • Use sketchbooks to record observations, experiment, and develop ideas.
  • Refine mastery of techniques in drawing, painting, and sculpture using a variety of materials such as pencil, charcoal, paint, and clay.
  • Explore the work of great artists, architects, and designers from different cultures and historical periods, using this knowledge to inspire their own work.

At Aintree Davenhill, our Art and Design curriculum encourages children to take creative risks, reflect on their work, and develop an appreciation for art in all its forms. Through high-quality teaching and inspiring opportunities, we nurture pupils' artistic confidence and expression.
