Year 3 Football Tournament
Whilst we were all picnicking in the sun, our year 3 football team were battling it out in the Active Soccer football tournament. We took two strong teams and all children performed magnificently. One of the teams played three close games, losing the first game 1-0, losing the second 4-3 (a goal scored with the last kick of the game), and finally losing their third group game to a strong St. George’s team. The other team fared better in the group stage, winning all three games without conceding a goal (4-0, 5-0 and 2-0). They went on to the quarter-final stage where, despite trailing 1-0, came back to win 5-1 against Melling. The team marched into the semi-final against a really strong St. John Bosco team. Having raced into the lead thanks to two goals scored by Joshua Thebe, they found themselves level with no time to score a winner. Extra-time loomed. Both teams battled tirelessly but there could only be one winner. Oscar Hudson finished an excellent move which he also started and the team won 3-2. The final of the tournament consisted of Aintree Davenhill and Northway Primary. Both sets of players demonstrated great skill and determination and despite chances at both ends, neither could find a winning goal. The match drifted into extra- time but still the teams could not be separated. Penalties beckoned. The boys looked confident, however due to some fantastic work from the Northway goalkeeper, we were sadly beaten.
All of the children who took part in the tournament should be proud of their footballing achievements this year and look forward to some more exciting competitions next year!
