Mathematics is a vital part of everyday life, providing a means of viewing and making sense of the world. It is vital that children are aware of the importance of mathematics beyond the classroom and can use and apply the knowledge, skills and understanding they acquire. It is necessary to provide firm foundations for subsequent mathematical learning and for everyday life in general.
Here at Aintree Davenhill, our aim is for children to enjoy mathematics and have a positive attitude to the subject. We believe that successful learning enables children to develop the confidence to meet the challenge of new work.
At Aintree Davenhill, we follow the new curriculum for the teaching of mathematics. We place a great importance on mental mathematics, calculation methods and problem solving. Every day the children in Year 1 to Year 6 practice four calculations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) to improve the accuracy of written methods. During lessons, we plan opportunities for the children to solve a range of puzzles and problems working independently, in pairs and in groups. Mathematics is led and managed in school by Miss Clay.
